As an aromatherapy student, scent is a large part of my life. I have a kit of nearly 50 essential oils and love learning the physical, mental and spiritual effects of these powerful oils. I will often use essential oils as fragrance, using the precious florals rose, neroli, jasmine and ylang ylang in my facial oils or on my wrists to add a sweet and therapeutic aroma.

I also have a long and complicated relationship with perfume. Growing up, my older sister worked in cosmetics and my mom worked at a department store. Brands like Lancôme and Estée Lauder were a big part of my beauty routine and I even worked as fragrance demo in university, introducing customers to perfumes in The Bay.

Demoing fragrance for Lancôme back in the day!

When I started to switch over to clean beauty products, specifically Beautycounter, when my last baby was born, I struggled to find a clean perfume. My favourite during these years was Aerin Lauder’s Rose de Grasse pour filles. I still love it and the sweet packaging with its grosgrain ribbon. 🎀

But it wasn’t a clean fragrance by any stretch. I also fell in love with Lvnea, a Canadian brand with gorgeous perfumes.

When I learned in 2023 that Beautycounter was launching perfumes, I was over the moon. I knew the amount of research and attention to detail that would go into the products. Beautycounter is a company that takes its time to create the most sustainable and safe products, that can stand beside luxury brands in terms of quality and results.

Some fun facts about Beautycounter’s new line of perfumes:

  • The creation of the fragrances took 10 years of research and development
  • 2800 questionable commonly used fragrance ingredients were rejected in the process
  • ALL of the ingredients are disclosed, going against the traditional fragrance industry technique of listing simply “fragrance” (known as the fragrance industry loophole)
  • The scents are absolutely beautiful! Hyper Rose is my favourite, followed closely by Second Skin.
  • The perfumes are in recycled glass bottles and the ingredients were chosen for sustainability (some natural essential oils such as sandalwood are endangered so safe synthetics are used in some instances).
